History

The Port Lincoln Cellar Folk Club – a potted history

Since inception in 1994 The Cellar Folk Club Inc. has met monthly in the Cellar at Boston House, thanks to the generosity of the owners Heather and Ron Campbell.

Since then The Cellar Folk Club has provided a venue for performers of a variety of genres e.g.: acoustic music, poetry, comedy and storytelling to perform while at the same time giving its audience an entertaining, thought-provoking and fun night out in good company – free of charge.

During those years, The Cellar Folk Club has run a variety of workshops including Song Writing Penny Whistle classes, Ukulele sessions and Singing workshops for club members and the broader community.

We have provided many musical combinations to support numerous community groups, charities and fundraising events, including supporting Novita, the Port Lincoln RSL, Tunarama, Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, Matthew Flinders Home, Mayor’s Concert, Mental Health Week Sideshow Alley, Duchene fundraiser and organising the 2009 Bushfire Fundraiser in conjunction with Bendigo Bank. Musical entertainment has been provided at Art Openings, a Shanty Group to welcome visiting tall ships, Anglican Church Strawberry Fete, 150th birthday celebrations for Mill Cottage, Kirton Point Primary Gala Day, The Port Lincoln Show and the Yallunda Flat Show amongst many others.

We have run several song writing workshops with various visiting musicians, including one which resulted in a recording of fifteen original songs produced at the workshop, thus giving attendees experience in a recording studio as well.

A weekly session called PLUMS (Port Lincoln Unplugged Musicians and Singers) held in homes for nine years provided another opportunity to meet and play and to support musicians and singers.

The Cellar Folk Club has brought an incredible array of performers from all over South Australia, interstate and the world. A quick look through our files show at least 50 individuals or groups from Australia and 20 from overseas. Some 150 plus performers performed for the Port Lincoln public at individual concerts or one of our four Stinky Creek Folk Festivals 2004 – 2007. This has been a wonderful promotion of Port Lincoln as these artists spread the word of our city and the great time they had here. Thousands of people have attended over the years. We have had over 8000 individual attendees at our monthly gatherings. Another few thousand attended our four-major award-winning Stinky Creek Folk and Music Festivals, Medieval Feasts and Multicultural Day.

We have organised many well attended Bush Dances, open to the public, in Port Lincoln and the Dutton Bay Woolshed.

We have run a few member’s retreats which have included workshops to further the skills of members and introduce people to new instruments.

We currently have several groups associated with The Cellar Folk Club Inc. which perform regularly in and around Port Lincoln including The Lincoln Larrikins, Port Lincoln Ukulele Group (PLUG), The Dark Clouds, The Chalkie and the Chippie, The Accidentals and Fudge.

We have taken club members and friends on the road many of times and performed for smaller communities on the Eyre Peninsula including Arno Bay, Port Neill, Elbow Hill, Coffin Bay, Tumby Bay, Louth Bay, and Wudinna.

The Cellar Folk Club Inc. has been the recipient of various awards, including The South Australian Community Event of the Year 2006, The Port Lincoln Event of the Year – for Stinky Creek 2006 and the SA Great Award for the Arts for our region in 2004.
